Hulsoor Somanatha Temple

The Hulsoor Somanatha Temple, also known as the Halasuru Someshwara Temple, is a historic Hindu temple located in the Halasuru neighborhood of Bangalore, Karnataka, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Lord Someshwara and is known for its impressive Dravidian-style architecture.¹

History and Legends

The temple dates back to the 9th century during the Chola dynasty, with subsequent renovations during the Vijayanagara dynasty between the 15th and 16th centuries.² According to legend, Kempegowda I, the founder of Bangalore, built the temple after Lord Someshwara appeared in his dream and instructed him to build a temple using hidden treasure found underground.

Temple Features

The temple features a square sanctum (garbhagriha) surrounded by a narrow passageway, a closed mantapa (hall) with decorated walls, and an open mantapa with 48 pillars. The temple also has a gopuram (temple tower) at the entrance, which is decorated with intricate sculptures and carvings.

Festivals and Timings

The temple is open every day between 6:30 AM and 12:30 PM, and between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM. The main festivals celebrated at the temple include Mahashivaratri, Brahmotsavam, and Karthika Somawaram.
